LAVT Panels
An LAVT panel is a cubicle which houses a Lightning Arrester (Surge Arrester), Surge Capacitor, and Voltage / Potential Transformers for a Phase Isolated Bus Duct. Lightning arrestor is there to provide protection against any surges in voltage, hence the name lightning arrestor, it is a device that safely diverts any surge in voltage “away” from your plant therefore protecting your equipment against overvoltage conditions. A capacitor is connected in parallel with the lightning arrester for enhanced protection as well.
The voltage transformer will probably be for either protection purposes or for some instruments on your system. If you have a voltmeter or wattmeter etc on the panel then it is probable that it’s supply is derived from the VT. A VT transforms the primary voltage, in this case 11kV down to a low voltage (probably 110V) to give an accurate representation of the system volts, which can be incorporated into protection devices and measuring devices. LAVT Panels are used in all high voltage power Plants wherein for protection of the Alternator. This unit is phase isolated and is mostly connected to the bus duct.

Neutral Grounding Resistor (NGR) / Neutral Grounding Transformer (NGT) Panels
BRITE ENGINEERS Designs and manufacturers Neutral Grounding Resistors Panels for voltage levels up to 36kV for any current rating.
Resistors are manufactured in punched, Rod formed, Wire Wound and Cast Iron form as desired by the customer.
A gland plate is provided in the NIS cubicle for the Incoming Neutral, or for the Three Phase Incoming Cables, where star is formed inside the NIS Cubicle.
A Single Pole Isolator is provided in the Neutral Circuit and the other end is connected to the NGR. The HT Bushings, to connect the NGR Terminals are mounted on the partition wall of the NGR & NIS Cubicles.
LT Terminal Box for housing Thermostat and MCB, ON / OFF indicating lamps & LT terminals of Isolator & CTs etc. are provided in the NIS Cubicle.
NEUTRAL GROUNDING RESISTOR (NGR) is employed in AC distribution networks to limit the fault current which would flow from the transformer or generator neutral star point to a safe value, in the event of an earth fault in the systems, without exceeding specified temperature limits.
Advantages of using NGR: –
- Installation of NGR in the system reduces mechanical stresses in circuits and equipment subjected to fault currents. This also reduces the electrical-shock hazards to personnel caused by stray ground fault currents in the ground return path.
- Reduction in the momentary line-voltage dip occasioned by the occurrence and clearing of a ground fault.
- To secure control of transient over-voltages while at the same time avoiding the shutdown of a facility circuit on the occurrence of the first ground fault.
Installation of NGR protects critical and expensive equipment such as Transformers and Generators from damage due to earth faults.

MV Capacitor Panels up to 33kV
MV/HV APFC capacitor metal enclosed panel is normally used where system having less space with very high fluctuating loads at MV/HV side.
For optimum utilization of available power, the reactive power consumption should be reduced or nullified i.e. power factor should be unity, hence, most of the Power Distribution companies have policy to penalize the industrial and commercial consumers for not maintaining power factor in Leading as well as in Lagging.
However, due to reactive power drawn by capacitive or inductive load in the consumer premises the power factor is either lagging or leading, thus to maintain it within limit i.e. for compensating or supplying required KVAR, the capacitors (in case of lagging PF) or reactors ( in case of leading PF) are connected across the system.
For stable load the fixed KVAR compensation is required, while for variable load the KVAR requirement also changes as per the load duration cycle, thus in such case the Automatic Power Factor Control Panel is installed.
These Banks Consist of
- MV/HV capacitors
- Current limiting reactor
- Protection fuses
- Automatic control unit
- Contactors for switching
- CT, PT for metering and protection
